Preferring outdoor workouts

I am officially perspiring profusely before I even complete my warmup

Living in Lakeland, Florida, provides plenty of activities! The neighborhood is located approximately an hour southwest of Orlanda and a little over a half an hour east of Tampa, and it’s close enough to that I often buy tickets to Tampa Bay Lightning hockey games, and when family comes to visit, I take them to Disney World. There are, however, lots of chances right in Lakeland and the nearby vicinity. The Circle B Bar Reserve offers 1,300 acres and an ideal endpoint for locals and tourists alike. There is a series of well-ran tests on trails for hiking, cycling and spotting wildlife. The dove population is incredible, including waterflow, ospreys, bald eagles and many types of wading doves. There are also lots of alligators that range in size from a few inches to the length of a car. I like to head to Circle B Bar Reserve for a workout. The trails are clearly marked and hard-packed and offer incredible scenery; Because the weather in Lakeland tends to be especially tepid and humid, exercising outside can sporadically be difficult, and for the majority of the year, I need to complete the workout genuinely early in the morning, to avoid the heat of the afternoon. I genuinely cherish the brief winter season season, when the low temperature gets down into the fifties. It’s a scarce treat to wear long pants and a blazer when I go for a run or a bike ride. I am officially perspiring profusely before I even complete my warmup. By necessity, I’ve set up a condo gym that is equipped with air conditioner. I have invested into a stationary bike, treadmill, jump rope, battle ropes, free weights, incline bench and a yoga mat, and while I would regularly appreciate to workout outdoors, I can’t tolerate uneven temperatures in the nineties and high humidity.

Not cheerful with the winters

I take unquestionably wonderful care of my heater

I moved to Elgin, IL, from the southeastern coast about five years ago, and i had never experienced snow or temperatures below cold before. I initially relocated in the fall and was glad by the colorful scenery, crisp air and orange skies! Getting away from the excessive heat and humidity was a relief. I was gleeful to bundle up in jackets, scarves, hats and boots. When the temperature dropped into the fifties, I turned up the temperature control, and my dwelling was perfectly sizzling and comfortable, then unluckyly, the temperature continued to plummet. It dropped below cold, and it was impossible to keep warm. It also snowed steadily, accumulating in feet. I was not prepared for how long the winter time conditions lingered. While Elgin is a absolutely lovely area and I have no intention of moving, I still despise the winters. I start dreading the cold weather in September. I know it won’t be long before I am trapped inside for six to eight straight months; Every time I want to go somewhere, I’ll need to let the car defrost for twenty minutes, brush the snow off the hood and scrape ice from the windshield. Spending time outdoors shoveling the snow is just awful… The only part of the winter time I enjoy is snuggling up under a blanket with a mug of tepid chocolate. I take unquestionably wonderful care of my heater. I absolutely don’t want to face a abrupt malfunction in the middle of the night and be left without heat. I have enrolled into a maintenance program with a local Heating and A/C company that includes two service calls per year and 24/7 emergency response without overtime fees.

Pregnant during a Tampa summer twice

When I was pregnant with my first son I didn’t think any of it.

  • I wanted a baby, we tried for one and I got pregnant.

Well I got pregnant in February and was due in April. I live in Tampa, FL and had a pregnancy during the hottest parts of the year. Being extremely pregnant when it is super duper hot is horrible. The heat and humidity is rough. Being pregnant on top of that was horrible. I am not some type of blushing wallflower that hangs around in the AC all day either. I worked out in my shed that didn’t have any AC. I then went for walks, read, did yard work, painted my shed, and was outside in the heat of the day. Going inside when the AC was pumping was my only relief. I remember sleeping with just a sheet on my bed and still being hot. I then told my husband that I would never be pregnant over the summer again. Whoops. We didn’t plan for it, but I am pregnant again. I got pregnant in March and I am due in December. So it is the same situation. I am going to be prepared this time around. I have AC in my shed ready to go. I also have the home AC upgraded. I also got an above ground pool for outdoor time during the heat of Tampa summers. I still am not happy with my situation. Being pregnant during a Tampa winter would have been quite comfortable. It isn’t that cold where you have to bundle up or anything like that.

They didn’t skimp out on the AC

My house in Birmingham is older and constantly fighting me when I want to make changes.

Whoever designed the home was a man.

There is no storage anywhere. There is a giant room that housed a bunch of guns though. The laundry was outside in the shed. There was a huge master bedroom, separate bathroom but with a tiny kitchen. They didn’t utilize their space well. The HVAC component in my Birmingham house is top of the line though. I actually own a high velocity HVAC unit. This where you take a smaller, flexible duct to fit into the slats of an older home. The air quickly whips around the space to lower the temperature. It is highly effective and efficient. The ductwork doesn’t get damaged or cause any issues in the home. I love the cooling function during an AL summertime. The AC kicks on and I feel the blast within a few moments. The man who designed and paid for the AC really treated himself. I don’t suffer at all in the heat. I just wish there were other practical elements as well. I am constantly scrimping and working around for a nicer storage situation. I am always trying to gain space in my kitchen without any luck. The gun room is going to need to go for sure. I could make it a huge pantry or a storage closet. Who knows where my life might take me a few years though. It might turn out to be a baby’s room.

Upgrading the thermostat changed the look of the house

When I bought a house in Fort Worth, Texas I made the decision to fix it up.

I hated that the house looked kind of like an old farmhouse.

I did everything I could to modernize it. I scraped all my popcorn ceilings, added a coat of mud, sanded, and then painted smooth. I added recessed lighting. I changed the brown carpet to gray tile. I painted all the walls with cool tones. I even added custom furniture pieces of dark wood and fancier couches and chairs to the home. I redid the kitchen with stainless steel appliances, better backsplash, and choice curtains. The house is a blend of farmhouse and modern. One thing that I really feel added a nice final touch was the wall thermostat. There was an old dial thermostat that used a plastic toggle. You could toggle between 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90. That was about it. It wasn’t all that precise and was easy to bump. My husband hit it all the time and couldn’t read the numbers. It looked ugly and clashed with my decor. I talked to the local Fort Worth HVAC business about what I could do. They recommended changing it to a smart thermostat. These modern innovations come with silver surrounds, attractive interfaces, and wireless capability. We can now change the heating and cooling from our phones. It learns cooling behaviors so we don’t even need to lift a finger. Energy tracking, geofencing, air filter alerts, and voice command are other pros to this system. I have to say the appearance of the thermostat still remains my favorite thing.

Investing in my heating comfort

I recently got a work promotion since I was willing to move anywhere.

I told my boss to name the location and I would go. I wanted more money, a better tile, and the ability to move up even further. Well I should have been specific. Now I am in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. There is literally nothing here to do. The weather is awful too. The cold is frequent and brutal. I basically run my heating system all the time. Since I have more money now I have invested in my comfort heavily. My house is large, modern, and with a huge plot of land. I have a better car. I also sprung for a top of the line mattress. The heating system is my prize though. I bought a boiler system and had piping hooked to it. The piping is installed within my floorboards to create hydronic heating. My boiler heats water and the hot water flows through all the boards. Then I have heated floors. It is a silent heating system that requires little maintenance. Since it is water based and not air, nothing rises to the ceiling or creates cold spots. It is cleaner, more effective, and quiet. I also use that same boiler system as a snowmelt system in my driveway during the peak of winter. That way I never need to shovel snow and my car stays warm that sits on the driveway. Yes the boiler and all these add ons were costly. But it was totally worth it in the end. I am not loving Sioux Falls right now but I have done everything I can to make it better.

Using three heating systems in Minnesota

I use three heat systems in order to get by during a Minneapolis, MN winter.

The heating systems are necessary for that severe cold, ice, and snow.

I use a ductless mini split to keep my kitchen warm. The mini split is powerful enough for the bathroom and the entryway as well. Then my living room, office, and den all are heated by a gas fireplace. Upstairs I use a Moore heater that keeps that entire space warm. It is a lot of different units all working together to create a warm home. In the winter season I spend a pretty penny. It is worth it though. I have since decided to spend more money on things I use all the time. My bed is extremely expensive. I bought the best I could. I spend a ton on face products, shoes, and now my heating equipment. Whatever is constantly in use, gets more money. My heating equipment is additionally babied. I have a heating technician local to Minnesota that does all my maintenance needs. The guy inspects all three systems for damage once a year. He also performs cleaning, oiling, tightening, and inspections. I make sure that all wear and tear is reduced. I don’t want to deal with an unexpected repair or breakdown. When the winter starts, I need a reliable source of heat. It is also harder getting an appointment during a Minnesota winter. Everyone is thinking the same thing. They want new heaters, have a repair, or require service. Getting ahead of the game is always a smart idea.

The change in weather

When I moved down south to Florida my family was shocked.

We all lived up north most of our lives.

So why would I leave? I hated the northern weather. Most of the year was cold. We had snow, ice, hail, and severe windchill for months on end. The summer season wasn’t warm enough to warrant air conditioning. I didn’t like the potlicis, town, and where I was going. So down south I went. No more state insurance, inspections for cars, democratic views, and cold weather. I now enjoy St. Petersburg, Florida. I was originally shocked by the weather. I knew it would be warmer, but not that warm. The first thing I did was upgrade my cooling situation. The AC plan just felt kind of small for what I needed. Rather than a ductless mini split, I sprung for a central device. I got heating with it as part of the deal. I kind of thought I would never use my heating system. It is Florida after all. Well jokes on me. I am so glad that I have heating capability. I think if the system wasn’t both heating and cooling I wouldn’t have gotten heat later on. The Florida winter is brief but does get cold. There are times where it can dip below freezing. Weather in the 50s is more common though. After the cold nights on end, having a good heater is really nice to come home to. It is not at all like up north. It is just cold enough to give me a break from the heat. But it is not so cold that I need to wear heavy duty clothes.

Ductless split system improves comfort

About five years ago, my husband and I purchased a very large and older home in Springfield, Missouri.

The house has been renovated multiple times by various owners.

Walls have been removed and added to alter the floorplan. Windows have been added, and a screen porch was converted into living space. The basement was remodeled to include the laundry room, a guest bedroom and a home gym. Very few of these updates took into consideration the design of the ductwork or location of the supply and return vents. One thermostat for the entire house provided very broad control over temperature. The hot, humid summers and chilly winters in Springfield require effective and efficient cooling and heating. We were faced with extremely high monthly utility bills and a rather uncomfortable home. Certain rooms tended to be overheated in the summer while others were unpleasantly cold in the winter. When we reached out to a local HVAC provider in Springfield, we were hoping to update our ductwork to zone control. Unfortunately, our system is too old to accommodate this modern convenience. The HVAC technician recommended that we invest into a ductless multi-split system. This proved to be an affordable and ideal solution for us. The ductless system consists of a single outdoor air compressor that is compact, quiet and unobtrusive. It links by way of a conduit and small holes in the exterior wall to multiple indoor air handlers. The air handlers are lightweight, streamlined and mounted up high on the wall. Each one includes an independent thermostat and provides both heating and cooling. We are able to customize temperature settings in each room.

The advantages of a dual fuel system

South Bend, Indiana, experiences just about every possible climate condition.

The summers are short but especially hot and muggy.

Both spring and fall are windy, chilly, wet and bring frequent thunderstorms. Winter is always the longest season, lasting more than half the year. Temperatures are regularly below freezing and can plummet into the negative readings. We can expect more than five feet of snow accumulation, hail, sleet and blizzards. The weather requires running the heating system for around eight months. There is a very brief respite before it’s necessary to start up the central air conditioner. The cost of heating and cooling combine into about fifty percent of the household energy expenses. Although the cost of installing a hybrid heating system was higher than a more conventional option, it saves a great deal on monthly utility bills. My house in South Bend is outfitted with the combination of a gas furnace and electric heat pump. The advantage of this type of system is the heat pump’s ability to provide both heating and cooling. During the summer months, it performs just like a central air conditioner. It is especially good at handling excess humidity and wonderfully environmentally friendly. When the cold weather arrives, the heat pump literally reverses the flow of refrigerant to provide heat. The heat pump doesn’t cause issues with overly dry air and doesn’t burn fossil fuels. It costs a lot less to run than the furnace and handles comfort until outdoor temperature falls below freezing. At that point, the furnace automatically takes over and manages comfort.
