Living in Tampa was okay during the winter, but not in the summer.

• It didn’t matter where you lived, you still had your complaints about the summer heat.

My complaint included the humidity, and without air conditioning, I couldn’t survive. When my grandson started begging to go to Croc Encounter Reptile Park and Wildlife Center, I wasn’t overly enthusiastic. I wanted to stay home and veg, but he never asked to do anything. I couldn’t tell him no, so I told him to get his shower and get dressed and we would go for lunch. He told me they had rescued crocodiles, snakes, lizard, turtles, tortoises, and amphibians. He was telling me all about Amos, an American alligator. He said he got his name from the owner’s son. He was more interested in the alligator wrestling tour. You got to see a man and alligator wrestle, and they did some really fun stunts, but he wasn’t sure what stunts they were. I didn’t know what some of the animals were, like the broad-snouted Caiman and the black and white Tegu, but Billy said we would find out when we got there, He knew about the Nile crocodile, Cane toad, and Cuban tree frog, because he ‘learned’ them while in school. I was glad they had an indoor venue so we could get out of the heat, but I had to admit that I had a lot of fun with Billy that day. It was my first trip to Croc Encounter, and I couldn’t have thought of anyone better for my first time than with my grandson Billy.

Last week, we were in the middle of a heat wave, and not even the air conditioning was helping to cool us off.

We talked about going to the pool, but there were so many people there, there was standing room only.

My kids wanted to go to the Big Sioux River. They had read you could rent kayaks there. I kind of balked at $60 per person rental fee, but I would have paid the same price for an amusement park, and the kids wouldn’t have been on or in the water all day. I told them to gather their sunglasses, hats, and sunscreen, and we headed to where the kayak rental was. Now, we had a problem. Our son wanted the stand up paddle board, but my wife wanted the pedal boat. I told them they had to all choose the same thing, or no one was going on the water. We opted for a raft, so we could all go together. The staff could set up a route for us that could be accessed by raft. Our route took us down the Big Sioux River, and through downtown Sioux Falls. It was hot, but the water was soothing and we had our hands or legs in the water most of the time. The entire experience was fun, and we didn’t need to focus on our route, but just on having fun. I know I balked at the price, but it was definitely worth it when we all got off the river and were laughing. Our youngest son fell in the water, and we had to fish him out. Other than that, there were no sunburns, and it helped to beat the heat.

When my husband told me they offered him a better job, but it was in Tuscaloosa, AL, I told him it was his decision. If the job was great, and it paid better, he should take it. We didn’t have any children, and our family was scattered all over the US. We had nothing but ourselves to keep us in PA. I didn’t mind the warm summer, because back home it was also hot and humid in the city. We had to have air conditioning no matter where we lived. What I minded was when Christmas arrived. We used to go to the mountains and go skiing. There was snow to greet Santa Claus, and it wasn’t really winter unless it was cold outside. It really bummed me until my new friend told me about all the celebrations and Christmas lights they had in Tuscaloosa. We spent an entire weekend going to Christmas stores and checking out the Christmas lights while our husbands worked. I told her we used to drive through the town and look at all the Christmas displays, and she took me to theirs. They were what I was dreaming of, because we would have hot chocolate and be wrapped in warm coats. They had heavy sweaters at night, but I guess it all had to do with who you were with, and I was with my husband and good friends. I promised my friend that next year, we would take a trip but to my hometown for a weekend, and she could see what a real Christmas was like.

It was extremely hot the last couple of weeks, and my kids were bored sitting in the house. I had never seen them refuse to go outside and play, but the heatwave was getting to them. We had turned the thermostat up to seventy-five, hoping the electric bill wouldn’t be too high. I remember when we lived in the northeast, and there was always humidity during the summer. I couldn’t imagine living there if the temperatures were nearing 120 and the high humidity was high. I asked my kids if there was anything they would like to do? I think they had already anticipated my question, because both of them should SEA LIFE and LegoLand at the same time. I couldn’t blame them. I loved going to SEA LIFE and Legoland is a lot of fun for kids and grownups. We could spend the entire day there, and still not see everything. We got online and ordered tickets for the next day. LegoLand Park is the only inside park around, and it has excellent air conditioning. Even though the temperatures were back to normal, it was still 107 degrees outside. We got up early the next morning and left Phoenix to spend some time at SEA LIFE and LegoLand. Because I bought it as a package deal, it wasn’t very expensive, and it was a nice change for the boys. Early that evening, we stopped for dinner at their favorite restaurant and headed back home. The boys were sleeping even before their heads hit the pillow. They weren’t just tuckered out from the fun, but the air conditioning was relaxing even for me.

Last month, my niece told us she was having a theme wedding instead of a regular wedding.

I thought this was great, but it may be a theme few people cared to attend. She laughed and told us that me and gramps would feel right at home. I had a feeling I was going to be insulted, and I wasn’t wrong. She told me it was a Roaring 20s theme, and they were having it at Ragtops Automobile Museum. My husband told me the only reason I wouldn’t go is because I had gotten too fat for my flapper dress. I wasn’t too fat, and I ran upstairs to the attic to rummage through the old crate. Living in Royal Palm Beach, FL put me only a short distance from Ragtops Automobile Museum, but we had never been there. It was too hot to go outside, and he wanted to stay inside. One time it was winter, and tourists would be there. I thought he was kidding about going to Ragtops, since he said about summer and heat, and I knew they would have air conditioning. Now, our granddaughter is getting married at the Ragtops Automobile Museum. I wish I could describe all the cars they had for sale, and all about their museum. It was amazing, and I could easily see a wedding taking place here. A wave of nostalgia washed over me as I remember hearing my grandmother talk about the Roaring 20s. He asked me if I really didn’t want to go to the wedding. I told him I still fit in the dress, but we had to find him a Zoot Suit made for huskies.

I’m not saying the restaurants inside the big park aren’t good.

They have amazing food, but the prices are outrageous.

Most of the restaurants are outdoors, when you’re in the park. There are some that have air conditioning, but then you are looking at fine dining prices for BBQ cut quality food. It’s delicious, but after paying the price, you expect more than glorified hamburgers and french fries. If I’m paying for fine dining, and comfort, I would go outside the park. For breakfast, I would suggest you try Keke’s Breakfast Buffet. If your palate leans toward sophisticated, you’ll love their decadent waffles and pancake creations. Their omelets are made-to-order, and they can make any egg dish you can think of, along with stuffed french toast. Keke’s gives you a filling meal before heading to the parks. If it’s a date night you’re looking for, try one of the many steak or seafood restaurants they have around the area. There are some that are on the waterfront, and indoor/outdoor dining. You may even find air conditioning in the outdoor dining areas. What a treat. Whether you are looking for excellent food, an escape from the heat, or just a leisurely meal in a fun and air conditioned area, check out everything Orlando, FL has to offer. When you’re done with the restaurants, try something else. Whether it’s alligators in the wild, or wild animals where you’re driving through their habitat, it is fun for everyone. I think I’ve seen them at least three times, and the experience never gets old, but I am.

They had heavy jackets at night, but I feel it all had to do with who you were with, plus I was with my husband plus fantastic friends.
